What Charles Dickens Saw
Fantasy of Children Working in a Mill
Used as Propaganda by the Mill Manufacturers
Richard Oastler, who coined the term "Yorkshire slavery", asked
the following questions:
"Are straps used in factories?" (to beat the children)
"Are the children kicked and beaten shamefully?"
To gauge the times, one might consider Oastler's broadside,
"To the Factory Masters in Cragg Dale who have challenged Richard
Oastler without publishing their Names" (Published in "The Bogart!",
July, 1833).
